Tucson Series: Frontier Airlines – Light on Fares and Frills

The first post of the Tucson series takes a closer look at our first trip on Frontier Airlines. In the Discount Airlines: Watch the Fine Print Closely article, I shared our experience booking a direct flight on this low cost carrier and the associated fees that can add up quick. Here is a pros/cons list of the Frontier Airlines – Light on Fares and Frills experience after the trip:

  • The cost per ticket was the lowest hands down by $150-$200.
  • A direct flight to our final destination. No needing to drive 3 hours to a major airport or long layovers.

  • Extra fees for seat selection and carry-on bags.
  • Charges for beverages and snacks (except for a small cup of water)
  • No plugins to charge technology or access to WiFi.
  • Seats offer minimum amount of cushion making it a less comfortable ride. Reclining seats are offered in only 4 rows at additional cost.

Maximize Your Frontier Airlines Purchase and Experience

While there are more cons than pros, the savings and no layover outweigh the drawbacks in some cases. However, consider the following to make the trip more enjoyable for all:

  • Purchase Frontier’s first level Perks bundle so the seat selection and one carry-on bag fee are included. If not, the individual charges will raise the cost closer to the standard fare of most other major brands.
  • Bring beverages and snacks with you to tide your kids over. Purchasing these items on the plane cost less than in the airport, but not its not enough grub to sustain for a long flight.
  • Fully charge the tablets, laptops and other tech and make sure they are pre-loaded with entertainment. We all know what a lifesaver these can be with anxious or overexcited youngins.
  • Bring an inflatable small pillow or headrest to add a little more comfort to your sitting experience.

For a budget curmudgeon like me, the light on fares and frills option on low cost carriers is an attractive one for a couples getaway. But take extra precaution when traveling with your family so the no frills don’t become a headache.
